Local businesses support Nyanga UK 2010 project
The Insurance Partnership and Quayside Distribution have pledged their support to the ‘Nyanga UK 2010 project’. Their combined donation will contribute towards bringing a group of ten South African school children to Hull in June 2010 to learn about performing arts and British culture.
Nyanga 2010 was launched at a special screening of the BBC film Thunder Road, on the 4th October 2009 at Vue Cinema, Princes Quay. John Godber and the original cast were in attendance, which includes Yorkshire actor and founder of the Nyanga project, William Ilkley. William has strong ties with Hull. He was the leading actor with John Godber’s Hull Truck Theatre Company from 1988 – 2001 and has recently returned to the city to star in John Godber’s play Up and Under, which will run at the new Hull Truck Theatre this October.
William established The ‘Nyanga’ Arts Initiative ten years ago, to raise funds for the construction of a performing arts centre in Nyanga, South Africa. Last year, William and his company Dramart Productions, raised enough money to bring a group of children from the area across to the UK in June 2009, where they visited schools in Hull and met over 2000 children.
Thanks to support from The Insurance Partnership and Quayside Distribution, the project can run for the second year in a row, as William explains:
“We are delighted that the project will be able to run again next year. This year’s trip was such a success and received a great deal of support from local people and businesses. The kids learnt a lot during their time here and helped to inspire school children in Hull to get involved with performing arts.
“Thanks to our new sponsors and fund raisers throughout the country, we have enough money left over to fund extra curricular activities in South Africa for one year, which will train several children to become performing arts instructors. We are dramatically helping to raise their standard of living and want to extend our thanks to all of those who have helped make this happen.”
Rob Worrell, Managing Director of The Insurance Partnership comments: “It’s great to be involved with such a worthy cause. Not only are these children given the experience of a lifetime, they are helping to educate and inspire children here in Hull too. We wish William all the best in his endeavours and we are looking forward to meeting the children when they arrive in Hull next year.”
Mick Wilkinson, Managing Director of Quayside Distribution concludes: “We are keen to support local charities, however this is the first time we have supported an external charity. After meeting William and his team we were confident we could really help out and knew our donation would directly help improve the lives of the children in South Africa.”
